Evening visit - Tuesday 11 July - Houghton Hall and Sancton

Houghton Hall, near Market Weighton, will be the focus of the society's evening visit on Tuesday 11 July. Now the home of Lord and Lady Manton, the Grade 1 listed hall was built c.1765 for Philip Langdale, descendant of Sir Marmaduke Langdale, Royalist commander at the Civil War battles of Marston Moor and Naseby. Marmaduke is buried beneath the chancel of All Saints, Sancton - notable also for its Saxon priest's door and a fifteenth-century octagonal lantern unique in the East Riding - where our tour begins.
