Evening visit - Tuesday 8 August - Tranby Croft

Hedon & District Local History Society's final visit of the summer will be a guided tour of Tranby Croft , the country mansion built in 1874-6 for Hull shipping magnate Arthur Wilson, the site in 1890 of the Royal Baccarat Scandal - when Sir William Gordon-Cumming was accused of cheating at illegal card games attended by Edward, Prince of Wales - and now home to Hull Collegiate School. After the tour, Martin and Pauline cordially invite you to Hessle, where refreshments will be served. Evening visit - Tuesday 11 July - Houghton Hall and Sancton

Houghton Hall , near Market Weighton, will be the focus of the society's evening visit on Tuesday 11 July. Now the home of Lord and Lady Manton, the Grade 1 listed hall was built c.1765 for Philip Langdale, descendant of Sir Marmaduke Langdale, Royalist commander at the Civil War battles of Marston Moor and Naseby. Marmaduke is buried beneath the chancel of All Saints, Sancton - notable also for its Saxon priest's door and a fifteenth-century octagonal lantern unique in the East Riding - where our tour begins.   Meet : All Saints, King St, Sancton, York YO43 4QP, 6.30pm .
