Meeting 12 September - David Alexander Smith - The Hohenrein Brothers: Surviving the Great War at Home and Abroad

This is not a tale of heroic action on the Western Front or on the Somme; it is not even a tale about soldiers. Instead it recounts the effects of migration, nationalism and war on the lives of two brothers (and their families) during World War One, as well as on the communities they lived in. Georg Friedrich Hohenrein, a German butcher, had arrived in Hull from Germany in 1848 and started trading as a pork butcher two years later. He became a naturalised Englishman and his two sons, Charles and George, were born British citizens. G. F. Hohenrein & Son developed into a successful Hull business, with two shops and a delivery van that was a familiar sight on local streets. Charles took on his father’s shop at 7 Waterworks Street and served as a proud member of the East Riding Yeomanry. George, however, moved back to Germany with his German-born wife. And by August 1914 the two nations were at war ... New members always welcome ! Join at any meeting - £15 p.a.   Venu

Evening visit - Tuesday 13 June - Londesborough

The beautiful Wolds village of Londesborough is our destination for the first summer trip of 2017. From the fifteenth century to the 1920s, the village was owned by a succession of wealthy landed families - the Cliffords, Earls of Cumberland; the Boyles, Earls of Burlington; the Cavendishes, Dukes of Devonshire; and the Denisons, Earls of Londesborough - who all left their mark on the settlement. In the 1840s it was also owned briefly by George Hudson, the 'Railway King', who built a private station on his York to Market Weighton line. The original Elizabethan mansion was demolished in 1819 and later replaced by the current Victorian house. The park, however, remains that landscaped by Lord Burlington and his gardener Thomas Knowlton in the 1730s, and also retains a number of features from the formal gardens laid out in 1670. Our guided tour includes the Grade 1-listed Norman church of All Saints' , the Old Rectory, village and park. Meet : All Saints', Londesbor

President's Evening - Hedon Town Hall, 9 May 7.30pm - Valerie Wood, 'My Holderness'

Born in Castleford, award-winning novelist Val Wood arrived in East Yorkshire in her early teens and now lives in Beverley. 'My father obtained work as a war damage surveyor,' she recalls. 'I can remember looking at the bombsites and damaged buildings and wondered what had been there before. Perhaps that was the start of my interest in local history!'  Val's first novel, The Hungry Tide (1993), set on the crumbling coast of Holderness, won the Catherine Cookson Prize. Since then she has written over twenty romantic historical bestsellers, all based on extensive research, and all set in an and around Hull. Val's latest bestseller, No Place for a Woman , was published in October 2016. Read more about her writing here . Don't miss this chance to meet Val in the historic surroundings of Hedon Town Hall . Meeting 14 March - Dr Alec Gill MBE, 'Amy Johnson: Hessle Road Tomboy'

On 5 January 1941, Hull's pioneer aviatrix Amy Johnson - in 1930 the first woman to fly solo to Australia - crashed in the icy waters of the Thames estuary. In his new e-book, Amy Johnson: Hessle Road Tomboy , written to mark the 75th anniversary of Amy's death, local author and historian Dr Alec Gill MBE offers an intriguing insight into her life and seldom acknowledged Hessle Road roots - her fishing family heritage; the 'cod farm' business, Andrew Johnson Knudtzon Ltd, founded by her Danish grandfather in 1881 and still operating today; her early homes; the schools where she was ostracised by her classmates, played truant, and was often in trouble with the Head; and her abandonment of Methodism for fishing folklore superstitions. Dr Gill also covers her aimless years of celebrity after the Australian flight, her unluckiness in love, the mystery of her death, and the previously unheralded role of Hull trawlerman Harry Gould in her attempted rescue. Discover more of one of Hedon's hidden treasures - the Church of Ss Mary & Joseph - with society member Tony Hay .
